Just in time – we are on our way to the high country. What a welcome refreshment to the spirit to see the great blue-grey monoliths lifting up in the distance. As usual, we entered Colorado over Raton Pass and headed for Lake Trinidad State Park. What a great site. We were given one that backs up to the bluff overlooking the lake and the mountains in the distance. One night was not enough – we stayed three. That gave us time to explore the Highway of Legends (SH12)- the Spanish Peaks drive again, always a favorite. This loops from Trinidad west around Stonewall, then north past Cuchara to La Veta then east to Walsenburg and back south to Trinidad. For us this area has been a must drive since we first started camping. We learned to ski in the now closed Cuchara Ski area and have camped in various areas along the drive.
